Winter in Tahoe offers countless snow-filled activities, from world-class skiing at our area ski resorts to exhilarating cross-country skiing on miles of groomed trails – including North America’s largest cross-country ski area, Royal Gorge – to snowshoeing through snow-covered trees. But, on some snowy days, you might want to take a break from winter sports. For those days, The Cottages’ convenient proximity to Historic Downtown Truckee is perfect for some shopping!
Truckee’s downtown has a fantastic and eclectic collection of shops to stroll through. From homemade chocolates to locally-made jewelry to ski and snowboard equipment, you’ll have fun exploring the hidden nooks and crannies of this adorable mountain town.
Artisans
For those that like to celebrate hand-crafted treasures, Truckee has some great options. The combined location of Bespoke + Atelier is the perfect location to shop for a thoughtful handmade gift or beautiful art supplies. Atelier’s Reno location also offers both virtual and in-store art workshops in case you want to learn how to craft your own creations. Another spot to stop in is Riverside Studios. This bright and airy gallery is owned by local artists and showcases handmade objects: jewelry to leather goods, metal sculptures to pottery, and lots of beautiful paintings. For a unique experience, have a permanent piece of jewelry welded on to add some sparkle to your wrist or neck.
Clothing Boutiques
Historic Downtown Truckee is home to some great spots to buy a new outfit. Mo, Jo and Zo is owned by a mother-and-daughter team with great taste. The two started making jewelry as a hobby, and it blossomed into a successful business in 2010. Shop here for handmade jewelry, stylish accessories, and women’s clothing. If you’re looking for both men’s and women’s fashions, make your way to Cabona’s. Opened by Dave Cabona in 1918, this is the oldest retail store in the Truckee/Tahoe region. Through the years, the store has sold sporting goods, appliances, furniture, tires, and even functioned as a gas station. Generations of Truckee residents and visitors have shopped here to outfit their Sierra Nevada lifestyle.
Outdoor Gear
If you’re looking for some dependable gear to get outside, there are two great shops that have what you need. Tahoe Dave’s downtown Truckee location has all your winter rental needs covered with their huge selection of rental & demo equipment, including skis, boards, snowshoes, cross-country gear, kids’ equipment, seasonal rentals, and even rental clothing to keep you warm and dry. Save time and money by renting downtown instead of at the resorts. If you’re looking to purchase some new gear, make a stop at Tahoe Mountain Sports. While not downtown, it’s worth the trip if you need outdoor gear for trail running, skiing, swimming, hiking, or camping. Whether you need custom footbeds, rental ski gear, outdoor gear, footwear, or clothing, their knowledgeable staff is always there to help you get outside in style and comfort.
